The Centre on Tuesday extended the tenure of Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha by a year till June 28, 2026.

This will be his fourth extension on the post. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in the tenure of Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, on contract basis for a period of one year beyond June 28, 2025, up to June 28, 2025, on existing terms and conditions, said an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.

Kotecha is among the select group of lateral entry appointees who were picked by the Centre as specialists for government departments.
In another departure from the convention of appointing a bureaucrat to the top post, the Centre had in 2017 appointed him as the Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy).

Like Sheikh, many Indians have become cupping devotees. The therapy, which has its origins in traditional Chinese medicine and the unani system, involves placing small cups, often heated, on the body part that needs healing. Mohammad Shahid Malik, a Unani doctor, runs cupping clinics in Delhi and Aligarh and reports that ever since the Phelps news came out, enquiries have spiked. “People have also been calling to find out how to become a cupping practitioner,“ says Dr Malik, who does 25-30 cupping sessions per month. Dr Syed Izharul Hasan, who works under the AYUSH ministry and has a clinic at Rashtrapati Bhavan, says the practice is already quite popular in India. “The Olympic story might have given cupping more space in the public eye but people already knew about it. We have treated lakhs of people till now,“ he claims.

Says Rati Verma, ayurvedic practitioner, “In earlier times, abhyanga was a part of the daily routine. Ask an expert to do this as he or she will use varying pressure techniques. One may also do a dry massage using triphala powder.”
Shirodhara
Shirodhara, which comes from two Sanskrit words: shiro (head) and dhara (flow), is a form of Ayurveda therapy in which oils are gently poured over the forehead. It is one of the steps involved in Panchakarma (cleansing ritual) and is said to improve the vata dosha (energy pattern in the body). The forehead here is regarded as the ‘third eye’. The expert first determines what is the person’s dosha. It is followed by shoulder massage which loosens the tight joints. The steady drizzle of oil with the Ayurvedic herbs is poured from left to right or as per the dosha. The aim of the treatment is to relieve stress and eliminate negative thoughts by opening the ‘third eye’.

Herbal potli or compress
Here’s another indulgence that your body will love. Herbal poultice or compress also called upanada sveda, is where hot round muslin bags are placed on the skin to reduce swelling, pain, improve blood circulation and help one relax. The potli massage is done as per tradition; the round bags with fresh or dried ayurvedic herbs are chosen as per your treatment. You can try ashwagandha to relax tight muscles and reduce stress, neem to detox, lemon-mint to reduces stress and headaches and warmed rice to increase blood circulation. Once warmed, the bags produce heat and are placed in specific areas of the body. Follow it up with a cold shower to feel refreshed.

One of the mixtures to use is of Tila flowers, Pippali fruits, Jatti flowers, and Marica, and then grinding them with goat’s milk to prepare a wick. This, when applied to the eyes, helps improve vision.

Bayer's consumer health unit plans to step up India play

The Ayush services sector supports an estimated 1.76 million livelihoods in India, with women accounting for 43 per cent of its workforce, according to a recent assessment that highlights the sector's growing role in employment generation and economic growth.

The assessment, Ayush Service Sector Report by Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), released recently on Ayurveda Day 2026, said women's representation exceeds 50 per cent in several organised segments, including hospitals, day-care centres, educational institutes and wellness establishments.
Women account for more than 60 per cent of the workforce in spas and wellness resorts, 58 per cent in educational institutes, 57 per cent in day-care centres and 53 per cent in hospitals, it said.
"The growing Ayush services sector is creating meaningful employment opportunities across healthcare, wellness, education and allied services. Its expansion is not only strengthening India's healthcare ecosystem but also opening new avenues for entrepreneurship, skill development and women's participation in the workforce," Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said.
According to the report, more than one million livelihoods are concentrated in local and standalone clinics, demonstrating the sector's extensive employment footprint across urban and rural areas.

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said, "The expansion of organised Ayush services, supported by quality standards, skilling, digital infrastructure and stronger institutional networks, can significantly enhance both the scale and quality of employment. Greater participation of women in organised Ayush establishments also demonstrates the sector's potential to contribute to inclusive economic growth."

Addressing a curtain-raiser press conference for the 11th Ayurveda Day 2026 at the National Media Centre, Jadhav said the occasion should go beyond being a government programme and evolve into a people's movement and a national health communication campaign.

The event marked the commencement of the nationwide campaign leading up to Ayurveda Day.
The main Ayurveda Day celebrations will be held on September 23 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, with "Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow" as its theme, reflecting the vision of connecting India's rich Ayurvedic heritage with the evolving healthcare needs of the future.
Jadhav highlighted that the world is increasingly looking towards preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles, nutrition, wellness and holistic health -- areas in which India has a rich tradition and experience.
